How to Find Us...

Slough & Windsor Railway Society meets at "The Manor", a 19th-Century building of Great Western Railway origin, located within the boundaries of the Grade-II listed Slough railway station.

"The Manor" is adjacent to the railway and bus stations, with step-free access from both, so is easily reached by public transport. It is the two-tone brown wooden building to the west of the station entrance, by the bus station, on the access road to the West Car Park. The entrance faces the railway.

The building has been painted in GWR "Light Stone" and "Dark Stone", replicating the appearance of Great Western Railway station buildings and signal boxes of the 1930s.

Visitors with restricted mobility may be able to use the parking area adjacent to The Manor. (On the Detailed Map below, this is marked as 'Car-Park'.) Please check official signage for details. Blue badge holders can park for free, but must still obtain a ticket (there is one machine, in the car park beyond the bridge).

If driving, note that the station car park costs £5.90 for the evening (July 2022), although there are other car parks in the town centre. See Parking for more details.

By train:

Slough is served by regular trains along the Elizabeth line, and GWR services from London Paddington, Oxford, Reading and the west, and (of course) Windsor & Eton Central.

Leaving the main station entrance, turn right and walk towards the West Car Park. By the time you reach the end of the station building, you should be able to see the side of The Manor ahead of you. Take care when crossing the access roads.

By bus:

Many bus services call at Slough Bus Station, and The Manor is literally 'across the road'.

By car:

For navigation, Slough & Windsor Railway Society has an entry in Google Maps, or the What3Words location will take you to the front door; however, The Manor building no longer has its own post code, so some satnavs may have difficulty finding us.

Recommended satnav search terms:

  • What3Words: ///trains.front.owners
  • Google Maps: Slough & Windsor Railway Society
  • Google 'Plus Code': GC64+RP Slough

Alternative search suggestions:

  • The station: Slough Railway Station, Brunel Way
  • Or postcode: SL1 1FQ (The Porter Building, opposite the station entrance)
  • Or postcode: SL1 1XW (actually Tesco Extra – this has routed incorrectly on some systems!)

The railway station is off the A4 (Wellington Street), in the centre of Slough, and is easily reached from the M4 and M25.

Traffic can be heavy on Friday evenings, so please leave plenty of time for your journey.

Find "The Manor" on Google Maps

(and get directions...)

Entering Brunel Way from the A4, the station is straight ahead. Follow the road round to the left: the access road to the West Car Park is first on the right, just after the pick-up bay.

Watch out for buses and taxis, cars dropping-off and picking-up passengers, and for traffic exiting from the Tesco superstore.

From Reading direction:

Approaching on the A4 from the west (Reading) direction: follow signs for 'Bus station' (or the BR double-arrow symbol). Take the left-hand lane to turn into Brunel Way, which is immediately before Tesco's.

Watch out for buses moving. There are several bus stops directly on the A4, just before Brunel Way.

From London direction:

Approaching on the A4 from the east (London) direction is a little more tricky. Brunel Way is immediately after the Tesco superstore.

The lane markings are quite confusing – even for the locals! After the roundabout, the first set of traffic lights is for Tesco's car park: take the middle lane here to go straight on. Immediately beyond the lights, take the right-hand lane for the turning into Brunel Way, which is controlled by a traffic light with a right filter.

The nearest facility is the station's West Car Park, which has a large number of spaces. It is sited beyond the bridge and is reached by the access road that runs past the front of The Manor. Take care when walking back to The Manor, as the road under the bridge is narrow and there is no pedestrian walkway.

Number Plate Recognition is in use, and a ticket costs £5.90 for the evening (July 2022). Payment can be made by phone or online, or at the ticket machine that is sited well beyond the railway bridge. Blue badge holders may park free of charge, but must display their badge and still obtain a ticket from the machine.

Please note that the discretionary arrangement allowing SWRS members to park free-of-charge has been suspended until further notice. Make sure you purchase a ticket if you use the West Car Park.

Alternatively, there are cheaper car parks within walking distance around the town centre. Please note that parking at the nearby Tesco superstore is not free: there is a charge of £5 for up to 3 hours for shoppers, but it is refundable if you buy at least £5 shopping (information correct as of July 2022).

SWRS Members please note: Thanks to an informal concession from Great Western Railway* – for which we are extremely grateful – discretionary parking is now available to members on Friday evenings. This requires prior registration and members must first contact any SWRS Committee member, well in advance, for details.

As part of this arrangement, members MUST park in the main West Car Park, beyond the bridge, and NOT the parking area immediately adjacent to The Manor (where charges will still apply). NB – the discretionary arrangement only allows free parking for members between 6:30pm and midnight on Friday evenings.

 The Old Map!

The adjacent detailed map was drawn in the 1990s (!), using a software package designed for pre- Windows 95 computers.

The road layout and street names are basically the same, but the area has seen a number of major changes: the Taxi Hut has been demolished; the subway to the Town Centre has been filled-in; Thames Valley University site has closed; the roundabout is now a cross-roads; and the Bus Station has been demolished and rebuilt at right-angles (taking all the adjacent office blocks with it!)

The map will do for now, but in time it will need to be redrawn from scratch. (Volunteers welcome!).
